ABSTRACT

To achieve sustainable economic growth, a significant amount of private capital must be invested in green industries. However, risk management in the green industry stock market has drawn much attention recently due to the uncertainty and high risk present in this market. By applying the spillover index model of Diebold and Yilmaz, the frequency-domain spillover approach developed by Baruník and Křehlík, and the dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) model, this paper focuses mainly on the heterogeneity of the volatility spillovers among six green industry equities and other financial assets in China, under various market economy situations. Based on the empirical results obtained in this paper, we find that the green industry stock markets have the least impact on the gold and energy futures markets. Additionally, based on asymmetric analyses, it can be concluded that the green bond market has experienced the smallest shocks from the six green industry stock markets. By utilizing frequency-domain analyses, the energy futures market experiences the least amount of volatility from green stocks. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic affects the interconnectedness of markets. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, energy futures were the most suitable portfolio instrument for green industry stocks. When the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, however, gold proved to be the most advantageous portfolio asset. The research findings of this paper demonstrate the impact of COVID-19 on the selection of the best investment instruments for green industry stocks, which is beneficial for reducing the investment risk of green financial market participants and increasing the demand for green stock markets, while also providing practical advice for environmentally conscious investors and policymakers.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hyperinflammation is a key event that occurs with SARS-CoV-2 infection. In the lung, hyperinflammation leads to structural damage to tissue. To date, numerous lung histological studies have shown extensive alveolar damage, but there is scarce documentation of vascular inflammation in postmortem lung tissue. Methods: : Lung sections from 8 COVID-19 affected and 11 non-COVID-19 subjects [of which 8 were acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS) affected and 3 were from subjects with non-respiratory diseases] were stained for H & E to ascertain histopathological features including presence of thrombi/microthrombi. Inflammation along the vessel wall was also monitored by quantification of the expression of moieties of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway (NLRP3 and caspase-1). Results: : In lungs from “fatal COVID-19”, vascular changes in the form of microthrombi in small vessels, arterial thrombosis, and organization were extensive as compared to lungs from “non-COVID-19 non respiratory disease” affected subjects. The NLRP3 pathway components were significantly higher in lungs from COVID-19 subjects as compared to non-COVID-19 fatal cases without respiratory disease. No significant differences were observed between COVID-19 lungs and non-COVID-19 ARDS lungs. Conclusion: We posit that inflammasome formation along the vessel wall is a characteristic of lung inflammation that accompanies COVID-19. Thus, the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway seems to be probable candidate that drives amplification of inflammation post SARS-CoV-2 infection.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF), the end point of interstitial lung diseases, is characterized by myofibroblast over differentiation and excessive extracellular matrix accumulation, leading to progressive organ dysfunction and usually a terminal outcome. Studies have shown that umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (uMSCs) could alleviate PF; however, the underlying mechanism remains to be elucidated. METHODS: The therapeutic effects of uMSC-derived extracellular vesicles (uMSC-EVs) on PF were evaluated using bleomycin (BLM)-induced mouse models. Then, the role and mechanism of uMSC-EVs in inhibiting myofibroblast differentiation were investigated in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS: Treatment with uMSC-EVs alleviated the PF and enhanced the proliferation of alveolar epithelial cells in BLM-induced mice, thus improved the life quality, including the survival rate, body weight, fibrosis degree, and myofibroblast over differentiation of lung tissue. Moreover, these effects of uMSC-EVs on PF are likely achieved by inhibiting the transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) signaling pathway, evidenced by decreased expression levels of TGF-ß2 and TGF-ßR2. Using mimics of uMSC-EV-specific miRNAs, we found that miR-21 and miR-23, which are highly enriched in uMSC-EVs, played a critical role in inhibiting TGF-ß2 and TGF-ßR2, respectively. CONCLUSION: The effects of uMSCs on PF alleviation are likely achieved via EVs, which reveals a new role of uMSC-EV-derived miRNAs, opening a novel strategy for PF treatment in the clinical setting.

We posit that inflammasome formation along the vessel wall is a characteristic of lung inflammation that accompanies COVID-19 and that it is a probable candidate that drives amplification of inflammation post infection.

ABSTRACT

In less than 6 months, COVID-19 spread rapidly around the world and became a global health concern. Hypertension is the most common chronic disease in COVID-19 patients, but its impact on these patients has not been well described. In this retrospective study, 82 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were enrolled, and epidemiological, demographic, clinical, laboratory, radiological and therapy-related data were analyzed and compared between COVID-19 patients with (29 cases) or without (53 cases) hypertension. The median age of the included patients was 60.5 years, and the cohort included 49 women (59.8%) and 33 (40.2%) men. Hypertension (31 [28.2%]) was the most common chronic illness, followed by diabetes (16 [19.5%]) and cardiovascular disease (15 [18.3%]). The most common symptoms were fatigue (55 [67.1%]), dry cough (46 [56.1%]) and fever ≥ 37.3 °C (46 [56.1%]). The median time from illness onset to positive RT-PCR test was 13.0 days (range 3-25 days). There were 6 deaths (20.7%) in the hypertension group and 5 deaths (9.4%) in the nonhypertension group, and more hypertensive patients with COVID-19 (8 [27.6%]) than nonhypertensive patients (2 [3.8%]) (P = 0.002) had at least one comorbid disease. Compared with nonhypertensive patients, hypertensive patients exhibited higher neutrophil counts, serum amyloid A, C-reactive protein, and NT-proBNP and lower lymphocyte counts and eGFR. Dynamic observations indicated more severe disease and poorer outcomes after hospital admission in the hypertension group. COVID-19 patients with hypertension have increased risks of severe inflammatory reactions, serious internal organ injury, and disease progression and deterioration.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to identify the risk factors associated with prolonged shedding in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and to evaluate the effects of current clinical and clinicopathological factors on viral shedding in patients. A total of 186 COVID-19 inpatients were enrolled in this multicentre retrospective analysis. Detailed clinical data of each patient were collected, and the factors that affected the duration of viral shedding were retrospectively analysed. The median duration of viral shedding in the 186 COVID-19 patients was 13 days. The median duration of viral shedding was 12 days in non-severe patients, and 17 days in severe patients, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.001). Multi-factor regression analysis suggested that the onset-hospitalization interval [odds ratio (OR), 1.27; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.15-1.41; P<0.001] and comorbidity with a chronic disease (OR, 2.43; 95% CI, 1.14-5.17; P=0.021) were independent risk factors for prolonged viral shedding, whereas lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) was an independent protective factor (OR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.11-0.75; P=0.011). Spearman's rank correlation analysis showed that the onset-drug interval was positively correlated with the duration of viral shedding (r=0.446; P<0.0001). Umifenovir, and low and short courses of glucocorticoids were not associated with prolonged viral shedding. The prolonged viral shedding was the initial causative factor of persistent aggravation of the patient's conditions. The interval between presentation of symptoms and hospitalization as well as complications with a comorbid chronic disease were independent risk factors for prolonged viral shedding. LPV/r shortened the duration of viral shedding, and the smaller the interval between presentation and LPV/r onset was, the faster viral shedding occurred.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to observe the clinical characteristics of recovered patients from Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with positive in reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or serum antibody. The profile, clinical symptoms, laboratory outcomes, and radiologic assessments were extracted on 11 patients, who tested positive for COVID-19 with RT-PCR or serum antibody after discharged and was admitted to Hubei No. 3 People's Hospital of Jianghan University for a second treatment in March 2020. The average interval time between the first discharge and the second admission measured 16.00 ± 7.14 days, ranging from 6 to 27 days. In the second hospitalization, one patient was positive for RT-PCR and serum antibody immunoglobulin M (IgM)-immunoglobulin G (IgG), five patients were positive for both IgM and IgG but negative for RT-PCR. Three patients were positive for both RT-PCR and IgG but negative for IgM. The main symptoms were cough (54.55%), fever (27.27%), and feeble (27.27%) in the second hospitalization. Compared with the first hospitalization, there were significant decreases in gastrointestinal symptoms (5 vs 0, P = .035), elevated levels of both white blood cell count (P = .036) and lymphocyte count (P = .002), remarkedly decreases in C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A (P < .05) in the second hospitalization. Additionally, six patients' chest computed tomography (CT) exhibited notable improvements in acute exudative lesions. There could be positive results for RT-PCR analysis or serum IgM-IgG in discharged patients, even with mild clinical symptoms, however, their laboratory outcomes and chest CT images would not indicate the on-going development in those patients.

BACKGROUND: We retrospectively analyzed 26 persistently asymptomatic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) carriers. METHODS: Epidemiological and clinical characteristics from the 26 asymptomatic patients with positive results for SARS-CoV-2 ribonucleic acid testing were obtained. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients (84.6%) correlated with clustering occurrence. The median period from contact to diagnosis and the last positive nucleic acid test was 19 (8-24 days) and 21.5 days (10-36 days), respectively. The median period from diagnosis to negative nucleic acid test was significantly different between patients with normal or atypical chest computed tomography (CT) findings (n = 16, 61.5%; 7.5 days [2-20 days]) and patients with typical ground-glass or patchy opacities on CT (n = 10, 38.5%; 12.5 days [8-22 days]; P < .01). Seven patients (70.0%) with initial positive nucleic acid test results had a negative result simultaneously with improved CT findings. Obvious improvement in CT findings was observed in 3 patients (30.0%) despite positive nucleic acid test results. CONCLUSIONS: In asymptomatic patients, changes in biochemical and inflammatory variables are small and changes on chest CT can occur. It is worth noting that the long existence of SARS-CoV-2 in some asymptomatic patients and false-negative results need to be considered in SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid test.
